Invention of the Vacuum Cleaner

A vacuum cleaner is an electric device that cleans by the process of suction. Vacuum cleaners are used to remove dust and other waste materials out of carpets, rugs and bare floors. Not only this, they can be used to clean clothing, curtains, furniture, machinery and wood-work etc.

A vacuum cleaner is fitted with a suction-fan that creates a vacuum inside the cleaner. So, the outer air rushes in to fill the vacuum. Along with it let go the loose dirt, dust. There is a bag inside the cleaner. It traps all the dirt and dust and the remaining clean air is again blown out by the fan.

There are two main types of vacuum cleaner – canister vacuum cleaner and upright vacuum cleaner. A canister vacuum cleaner contains a bag and a fan as mentioned above. But an upright vacuum cleaner has a fan and an agitator –a cylinder with bristles. These bristles loosen the dirt/dust and it is sucked in to be trapped in a bag attached to the handle of the cleaner.

The first vacuum cleaner was developed by Hubert Booth in 1900 A.D.
