The temple has a rich heritage dating back to the 15th century, long before the Portuguese colonized Goa. Remarkably, it was never demolished or converted during the Portuguese rule due to its location in the Muslim-ruled area of Ponda, which served as a safe haven for Hindus at the time.

Over the years, the temple has seen several renovations, the most notable one being in the 18th century, supported by devotees and regional rulers.

A significant historical document—the temple's copper plate inscription (Sanskrit-Marathi) from the year 1413 AD—provides a rare glimpse into its antiquity and continuous worship.
